Is water leak detection really an art? If it were easy, every plumber would do it themselves. If there was a tool that could immediately and accurately find a hidden water or slab leak, leak detection companies would not exist. Leak detection specialists are able to blend cutting edge technology with experience and often a good ear to filter through a new information set on every job site. Its not as easy as they make it look. Just because you can hear a leak near the shut off valve in your home, does not mean that the water leak is anywhere near the shut off valve in your home. If you suspect a pressure side slab leak in your home because you have recieved a high water bill, hear a funny noise or have wet spots around your foundation, the first thing you should do is check your toilets and sinks. Really! They leak more often than all other kinds of leaks put together. If you are sure it is not the toilets, sinks or icemaker, you can call the water company, but it is not likely to be a faulty water meter. The water company may come out and take a look at your meter and can tell you if the leak indicator on the top of the meter is spinning and is likely to be a hidden leak. They may just take a look at your historical bills and see if they notice a sudden jump indicative of of pressure side leak. The water company is likely to only talk about their side of the meter and not your service line or the plumbing in your home. Some leak detection companies will offer a consultation either in person or over the phone to help you track down whether you may have a leak on your side of the meter. They may come out and take a look at your meter in the pit in your yard. They will be able to tell you if the leak indicator on the top of the meter is spinning or if you may have left the water on at the hose spigot overnight. As opposed to a call to the water company, if you have a leak, they can help you get on the path to getting it repaired.
